A Bit of Angel

By: Jonathan Scott, Lead Pastor at Newburgh New Life

The birth of the Savior is close.

All month long the angelic choir has been practicing their part in the divine Christmas program: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (Luke 2:14 NRSV).

It’s a short chorus, but a song introducing the Savior of the world better be perfect!

The Christmas account has more angelic appearances than any biblical account.

An angel appears to Zechariah concerning John the Baptist and tells the unbelievable news to Mary and Joseph.

An angel delivers good news of great joy to the shepherds in the fields nearby and a choir of angels sang the first Christmas carol.

It was also an angel who warned Mary and Joseph to escape Herod’s wrath in Egypt and then again when they could return.

It’s no wonder the writer of Hebrews, in chapter 1, picks up on the connection between the angels and the Son of God.

The comparison doesn’t last for long though. Hebrews tells us that the Son of God is far superior to the angels.

The Son was with God in the beginning. In contrast, the angels were created. The Son sits on the throne. The angels bow before it. The Son sits at God’s right hand. The angels are sent to serve.

And we are in the middle between the two.

It’s our reminder of how we should celebrate this Christmas.

If, in the Christmas story, every angelic activity advanced God’s plan, so can ours. If every breath worshiped the newborn King of Israel, so can ours. If every word echoed the greatest story ever told, so can ours. If the angels made it all about Jesus, so can we.

Maybe there is a little bit of angel in all of us yet.
